Marguerite - Master Potter
"When I combine clay, stones, feathers and other natural elements in my work, I am weaving the web and telling the story. We remember and reclaim the vital heritage of womyn as artists, creators of culture."
Marguerite has been creating in clay since 1965. A forerunner in the contemporary women's art movement and reclaimation of matriarchal symbols. Marguerite founded the matrifocal studio of Amazon Earthworks in the early seventies. "I decided to combine the words of Amazon (i.e., strong womyn) and Earthworks (i.e., clay from Mother Earth) to express my art."
Early on she focused on being a storyteller in clay and specializes in vessels that incorporate rich, strong matriarchal imagery and the sacred in nature. "I take great pride in knowing that through clay I'm continuing a tradition started by womyn thousands of years ago. And I hold true to my dedication to keeping handmade pottery alive in an age of mechanization and mass production."
The many fine works of Amazon Earthworks can be found in private and public collections in the U.S.A, Japan, Europe, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Canada and Aoteraroa (New Zealand).
